Final stage of archeological survey at Kailua Municipal Parking Lot to resume

HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Design and Construction will resume its archaeological survey of the Kailua Municipal Parking Lot on November 2, 2026 (weather permitting).

The survey was originally scheduled for completion in April but was delayed by the March Kona Low, which prevented crews from finishing the work.

The next phase will run November 2-6, 2026, with hours from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily.

The purpose of the survey is to determine whether culturally or historically significant resources are present and require mitigation prior to construction. The investigation includes exploratory excavation at 5 locations within the property and will require partial closures and temporary traffic adjustments.

Access to the parking lot will be maintained throughout the work via its two vehicle entrances and two pedestrian entrances, though temporary restrictions may apply. At times, the contractor may need to close one vehicle entrance at a time or implement contraflow traffic control to manage single-direction access. In either case, at least one driveway will remain open to the public at all times.
