HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu Department of Design and Construction will begin an emergency erosion control project along Maunawili Road. The project aims to repair damage beneath Maunawili Road and install erosion-control measures to stabilize the slope and protect the roadway from future collapse.
Construction is expected to begin on Monday, October 12, 2026, and is anticipated to take approximately four months. Work will take place Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., excluding holidays.
The project, awarded to Prometheus Construction, will involve clearing vegetation and debris, installing erosion control matting, placing anchors and micropiles, repairing drainage infrastructure and guardrails, and applying shotcrete.
The portion of Maunawili Road between Aloha ʻOe Drive and Kelewina Street has been closed since June 2024, when severe weather from a Kona Low damaged the area below the road. The road will remain closed indefinitely even after the project is complete, except for authorized personnel and equipment.
The contractor will coordinate and manage local area traffic for residents, including deliveries, trash collection, and emergency services. The public should anticipate delays and allow extra travel time when navigating the area. The public is advised to observe all traffic controls, posted signs, and traffic control personnel.
Every effort will be made to complete this emergency work as quickly as possible and with as little inconvenience to the community as possible. We appreciate the public’s assistance and cooperation during this project, and we thank them for their patience and support as we work to improve roads in our community. Questions and comments may be directed to the City and County of Honolulu, Department of Design and Construction, at (808) 768-8400.
